La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz: a day trip from the villa

La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz make a varied day out in northern Tenerife: wooden balconies and historic gardens in one town, followed by an Atlantic waterfront walk in the other. From Villa Dolce Vita in Armeñime, allow a full day and choose indoor visits to suit your interests.

Our suggested plan is La Orotava in the morning, a relaxed lunch and Puerto de la Cruz in the afternoon. If you would like several hours in the pools at Lago Martiánez, shorten the walking route or save swimming for another day. A few well-chosen stops are more enjoyable than rushing through every attraction.

A morning in La Orotava

Build your walk around the town hall square, La Concepción church, Calle San Francisco and the Casa de los Balcones. Add the Victoria Gardens if you feel like walking further. Leave time for a coffee and for looking at the façades: the streets between the landmarks are part of the experience.

We suggest two to three hours for a walk and one short indoor visit. There is no admission charge to stroll through the streets and squares. Museums, churches and enclosed gardens have their own visiting arrangements, so do not assume every interior will be open throughout the day.

Casa de los Balcones: tickets and opening hours

The official Casa de los Balcones booking page shows €7 general admission, with free entry for children aged six and under. The advertised visit includes an audio guide and free parking, subject to the venue’s conditions and space being available. Select your date and time to check the price before buying.

The venue’s contact page lists daily opening from 09:00 to 19:00, but specifies that the museum closes at 18:00. Bookable times can be more limited than general opening hours. Select your actual visit date, then follow the available slot and admission conditions shown in the official booking calendar. Avoid planning an arrival immediately before closing.

Puerto de la Cruz: a walk by the Atlantic

Start around Plaza del Charco and the old harbour, continue towards Plaza de Europa, then follow San Telmo towards the Paseo de Colón. This gives you a simple sequence of streets, squares and sea views, with opportunities to stop for a meal or a drink.

Allow around two hours with breaks as a planning guide. That does not include a long garden visit or an afternoon at the pools. Choose one of those options if you prefer less time walking around town. The Puerto de la Cruz tourism website is useful for orientation and local updates.

The Botanical Garden is in Puerto de la Cruz

Despite its name, the Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava is at Calle Retama 2 in Puerto de la Cruz. Tenerife’s official tourism website lists €3 admission and daily hours of 09:00–18:00, with closures on 1 January, Good Friday and 25 December. Check for changes with the garden on +34 922 383 572.

If you choose this stop, consider visiting before the waterfront walk. The garden is uphill from the town centre, so a car, taxi or bus can avoid the climb on foot. Around an hour inside is our suggested starting point; allow longer if plants are a particular interest.

Lago Martiánez: an optional swimming stop

Lago Martiánez is a seawater pool complex, separate from Martiánez beach. The municipal price agreement published in January 2025 sets non-resident admission at €7 for ages over ten and €4 for ages four to ten; children under four are exempt. A sun lounger is included and a parasol costs €3 extra. These are the official prices located during this review; confirm the applicable charge on arrival.

The municipal visitor listing gives entry hours of 10:00–17:00, with visitors allowed to remain until 18:00. Check your date’s hours and which pools are available before making swimming the focus of the trip. The council reported maintenance work in April 2026; that announcement does not establish which areas will be open when you visit.

Getting there from Villa Dolce Vita

By car: driving gives you the most flexibility for visiting both towns. Check an up-to-date route from Armeñime, traffic conditions and your destination parking before leaving. Avoid turning the journey into a separate trip across Mount Teide: the mountain crossing adds driving and different conditions. Allow time for parking and possible delays on the way home.

By bus: first travel from the villa to Costa Adeje bus station. TITSA route 343 links Costa Adeje and Puerto de la Cruz via both airports, with a published end-to-end journey time of about 100 minutes. Getting from Armeñime to the station and waiting for connections adds to that time.

Route 345 links Puerto de la Cruz, the Botanical Garden and La Orotava bus station before continuing towards the mountains. Check the direction and stop: the full route’s journey time is not the time between the two towns. Plan the return connections first and check TITSA for the fare for your exact journey. Simplify the day if the buses do not connect comfortably.

By taxi or private driver: request a quote covering collection in Armeñime, both towns, waiting time and the return journey. Ask about child seats if needed. For nine guests, confirm the vehicle capacity or number of vehicles. There is no single excursion fare we can guarantee.

Parking in the two towns

La Orotava: if you are visiting Casa de los Balcones, check its included parking arrangements. Another option to investigate is Lercaro, which the council introduced as a free public parking area. It can also host events, so follow the signs when you arrive. This is different from central street parking with time limits.

Puerto de la Cruz: the Martiánez shopping centre car park advertises 24-hour opening and accessible parking spaces. Its published non-resident rate is €1.49 per hour; check the entrance tariff and any discount conditions. Choose parking to suit your walking route and its gradients, rather than judging by map distance alone.

Accessibility and a more comfortable route

La Orotava’s historic centre requires some planning around slopes and paving. A shorter walk with convenient drop-off and collection points may work better than a complete circuit. The Victoria Gardens are arranged on terraces; do not assume every viewpoint can be reached without steps.

Casa de los Balcones describes a spiral staircase connecting its floors. We have not verified a fully step-free museum route. Wheelchair users should ask which areas can be visited and how the toilet is reached before buying a ticket. A disability discount does not establish full physical accessibility.

As an alternative, municipal tourism information describes the Telesforo Bravo Visitor Centre in La Orotava as adapted, with ramps between levels and free admission. It lists Tuesday–Sunday hours of 09:00–14:00 and 15:30–18:00; confirm before travelling on +34 922 922 371.

In Puerto de la Cruz, prioritise the waterfront and avoid adding the uphill walk to the Botanical Garden if gradients are difficult. For the garden and Lago Martiánez, confirm the specific entrance, toilets and, if you want to swim, the equipment available to enter the water. This guide does not certify either venue as fully accessible. If you need an adapted bus or a taxi with a ramp, arrange the service beforehand.

Back to Villa Dolce Vita’s private pool

After a day exploring the north, return to your base in Armeñime and enjoy Villa Dolce Vita’s private pool, with pool heating included in your stay. The villa has four bedrooms, three full bathrooms and a separate WC and space for up to nine guests.

For another northern Tenerife day out, read our Garachico and Icod guide. To plan your stay, check Villa Dolce Vita’s dates and prices.

Information reviewed on 29 October 2026. Suggested visiting times are planning estimates; confirm opening hours, prices and notices for your travel date.

La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz in your 2027 plans

For a 2027 holiday, keep this two-town outline and confirm the individual visits later. Museum tickets, pool opening, parking tariffs and bus timetables are separate arrangements. Renova’s Villa Dolce Vita guides help you organise a stay in Tenerife; they do not include tickets or a guided excursion. Choose fewer stops if your group needs a slower pace.
