El Médano and Montaña Roja make a coastal day out from Villa Dolce Vita in Armeñime, combining a seaside town with a volcanic landscape. Spend your time walking along the waterfront and stopping for lunch, or add a hike if the weather and your fitness make it a sensible choice.

Decide on the kind of day you want before setting off. The town promenade, the beach and the climb up the cone are different outings. You can enjoy the scenery without reaching the summit. We suggest allowing half a day for a relaxed town visit, or keeping more of the day free if you want to hike and have lunch.

El Médano: a waterfront walk and time by the sea

Start at the main square and follow the seafront for as long as you feel like walking. This is an outing that works well with a coffee, lunch and time on the beach, without a timetable of ticketed attractions. Towards Leocadio Machado, sails and kites become part of the landscape when conditions suit the water sports.

Tenerife’s official tourism website identifies the beach closest to town as the more family-oriented section, with windsurfing and kitesurfing further out. It also lists toilets, showers and places to eat. Wind can make a significant difference to your visit: check the beach flag and lifeguards’ instructions before swimming, and respect the separation between swimmers and water sports.

With younger children, staying near town makes it easier to shorten the outing or take a break. If you want to try a water sport, ask a school about ability, age requirements, equipment and the day’s conditions. Watching from the shore can be an enjoyable part of the visit too.

Montaña Roja: enjoy the view or choose a hike

The Montaña Roja Special Nature Reserve covers around 166 hectares and includes the 171-metre volcanic cone. You can see the mountain from El Médano and from the La Tejita side, so a climb is optional.

If you choose to hike, use a designated entrance and follow the signs. Sand, uneven ground and the gradient make the ascent different from a promenade walk. Wear closed footwear with good grip and carry water and sun protection. Leave the climb for another day if gusts affect your balance or adverse-weather warnings apply. These are planning recommendations, rather than a guarantee that a route is open or suitable for everyone.

Check where any quoted walking time begins: a route starting in the town square is different from one starting near the road. Choose a specific itinerary, allow for the return and finish in daylight. For a first visit without a long walk, the town and coastal views are enough to build a rewarding outing around.

Access and rules in the nature reserve

The reserve’s management plan, currently linked by the Tenerife island council, allows hiking in designated areas. We found no admission ticket or timed reservation for an ordinary private visit in the official sources checked. Organised recreational activities and professional productions have separate authorisation requirements.

  • Keep to the paths and obey signed closures.
  • Leave rocks and plants in place; do not feed or disturb birds.
  • Do not light fires or camp outside authorised areas.
  • Do not cycle up Montaña Roja or Bocinegro.
  • Keep pets on a lead and on the paths.
  • Swimming in La Mareta is prohibited.

Before travelling, check council notices and the Tenerife ON reserve information. Follow any closures or instructions you encounter on arrival. Permission to walk a dog within the reserve does not mean that every beach allows dogs.

Getting there from Villa Dolce Vita

By car: from Armeñime, check traffic and take the TF-1 towards the San Isidro–El Médano exit, then the TF-64 towards town. For reserve entrances on the La Tejita side, use the TF-643 towards Los Abrigos. Set your destination to a suitable parking area, rather than following a navigation pin onto the sand.

By bus: one option is to reach Los Cristianos first and take TITSA route 470. It connects Los Cristianos with El Médano through Las Galletas, Golf del Sur, Los Abrigos and La Tejita. TITSA gives around an hour for the complete route; add the journey from the villa and connection time.

If your connection brings you to San Isidro, another option is route 408 towards El Médano. Check the timetable for your travel day, exact stops, connections and journey fare with TITSA. Plan the return before leaving and allow an alternative to the last bus.

By taxi: request a quote from Armeñime and agree the return collection point. Specify whether you will finish in town or beside a reserve entrance. For nine guests, confirm the number of vehicles. Arrange child seats or an adapted vehicle ahead of time if required.

Parking: leave room for a change of plan

For the town, use signed parking spaces and allow time to walk from the car. We have not verified a single tariff covering El Médano’s different parking options. Follow the signs at your chosen location, including time limits, reserved bays and temporary restrictions for works or events.

The council announced the award of the modular car park construction contract in June 2026. That announcement does not establish that the facility has opened, so we do not list it as an operating car park.

For Montaña Roja, Tenerife’s tourism website identifies designated parking at the El Tapao bend and beside La Tejita. Check availability when you arrive. If the spaces are full, find another legal option or adjust the outing; do not park on dunes, block emergency access or use prohibited roadside areas.

Accessibility: focus on the town and urban beach

The Tenerife Accessible beach listing records reserved parking, a ramp, beach walkways, an accessible toilet and shower at El Médano. It describes assisted bathing with amphibious chairs and crutches as a summer-only service, from 10:00 to 15:00 and with a green flag. Confirm dates, availability and the meeting point before planning a visit around it. We do not present this as a year-round service.

Council announcements about accessibility improvements do not establish that every route is complete or obstacle-free. Wheelchair users and visitors with pushchairs should choose a manageable urban section and check the specific route onto the beach. The ascent over natural terrain is not proposed here as an accessible route.

The small Montaña Roja beach is reached on foot and is not listed as adapted by the tourism authority. Do not assume that the urban beach’s facilities extend to this cove.
